Plans to use the Brickpi with a new EV3 Mindstorms HELP

I am trying find plans that use BrickPi with EV3. The plans that I find require parts that are not included in the Lego kit that I just purchased for $371.89. Is this a normal occurrence? If it is maybe I should not recommend this option to our school district.
