Trouble connecting to PC

So you’re connected to the network at this point but unable to ping the Pi from your computer at this point?

There are a lot of ways you can get going with writing Python code on the GPG. You can also connect a keyboard and a monitor to the Pi to get going if you want to head that way.

Hey David00,
Can you try assigning a static IP following this tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P4yg8RYtTJs&index=5&list=PLGXEJ4Ye1qCMWziVrynnrIPpgfOr-2aj9. You should also read this discussion from the top for pointers on the connection problems.

Hi again,
I followed the static ip instructions and now when pinging the address it says “destination host not reachable” where as before I was able to ping it just fine in the command line. I was even able to go to Dex.local and get the page that displayed the VNC icon. its just that when I clicked on the icon instead of asking for password the box had “send CTRLALTDEL” written in it and would not let me input anyting and next to the box it said "server disconnected code 1006

changing the PI to static has not made any difference.

please instruct further

Hey David00,
What happens when you select the SHH option instead of VNC on dex.local screen. Also, what image/SD card are you using. Is it ours and do you have a date of the Image or the SD card.

Hi,

I get an “hmm we can’t reach this page”… in the web browser. the card is yours, I haven’t done anything to it accept to plug it in, the adapter has “Raspbian for Robots 2015.11.09” written on it

The address with ssh 169.254.216.101:4200 with VNC its :8001

The IPV4 address on my adapter is 169.254.109.162 so I increased it by 169.254.109.163. when I ping it in CMD it says “host unreachable” but it lists the 162 address 4 times with no packets lost. When i ping the 162 address it goes through and gets a response.

When I type the 163 address in the web page I get no results “not connected” when I type in the 162 address I get a checkered page titled internet information services"

my wifi is off. I have installed Bonjour print services. SO i actually get farther without assigning a static address. I have also tried a static address of 164 with no different results from 163.

however when I ping “dex.local” it shows the 169.254.216.101 even though I have a static address assigned and gets a response.

Hi David,

This is a little confusing. I have some ideas to try:

<li>Your best bet at this point might be to try "dex.local" in a different browser than you have before. So if you're using Mozilla, try switching over to Chrome.

Try clearing the cache of your browser.
Make sure you’re powering the Pi with the USB power, from the wall wart (Raspberry Pi Power Supply).
Make sure the wifi dongle is out of the Pi.
Make sure you are using “http://dex.local” as the address. If you’re using “https://dex.local” the browser will fail. Please note the S is for secure, and putting this in will cause a failure like you’re describing.

“The IPV4 address on my adapter is 169.254.109.162” - I think this is the IP address of your PC.

If the above steps don’t work, I would recommend re-imaging the SD card with the latest software -

Or contacting us for a replacement.

Please let me know what you try, and how it goes.

I got as far as the dex.local page and was able to get the command line (shell in a box) to respond (using chrome) but I can’t login because I don’t know what the logon is (the pass is probably robots1234).

Do you know what I need to do in chrome to get VNC to work. I need VNC to use visual GUI programming.

should I just re-image the card?

I think at this point, re imaging the card would be your best bet. It would just be faster for you to reimage the card. Here are the instructions to re-imaging the SD card with the latest software –

Ok I re-imaged and had to set up a static ip for communication to take place. I got as far as pinging Dexter industries via WiFi of the robot (following the instructions in the book) But when I attempted to connect to the robot wirelessly, I could not.

The computer and the robot are on the same network. I was able to ping the wireless address of the robot but not the wired nor dex.local

I tried dex.local in the browser and got “page not found” and then I tried the wifi address (169.192.1.42) which took me to the VNC icon page. When I clicked on the VNC icon I got “page not found” and the address bar showed 192.254.109.163:8001 (which is the static address I had assigend the robot when it was wired to the computer)

So what can I do now?

The robot does show up on the router I used the wireless IP and got to the initial page but when I click on the icon the browser shows a blank page, even with multiple devices.

Hey David00,

used the wireless IP and got to the initial page but when I click on the icon the browser shows a blank page, even with multiple devices.

Which icon are you clicking? Are you seeing the Raspbian for Robots homepage?

Yes I see the home page where the big VNC icon is. but when I click on it i don’t advance to the next page, I instead get a blank page with no connection.

Hey David00,
I think you have SSH access to the Pi. Can you try out Step 2 here: http://www.dexterindustries.com/howto/virtually-control-the-raspberry-pi/ and install Real VNC Viewer and try using it to log into the VNC. To log in use dex.local:1 or <Pi’s static IP>:1 and you should be able to see the desktop.

-Karan

There must be some misunderstanding, I have made it to “step O” on page 39 of the manual(mission 1) once I re imaged the card and gave the pi a static IP I had no problem connecting to the pi with the wired connection. I need help with the wireless connection now. There is a rather long conversation that I have been having with you and John in the previous page (Please look there).

Can yo help troubleshoot why I am unable to control the robot wirelessly. I am able to get to the Raspbian for robots home page wirelessly but cannot go any further.

Hey David00, I’m sorry if we’re losing the thread here. Karan is talking about installing VNC Browser, a program that goes on your computer. We’ve seen this resolve issues over wifi before.

A few posts back you stated “I tried dex.local in the browser and got “page not found” and then I tried the wifi address (169.192.1.42) which took me to the VNC icon page. When I clicked on the VNC icon I got “page not found” and the address bar showed 192.254.109.163:8001 (which is the static address I had assigend the robot when it was wired to the computer)”

Is this still the case? If that’s true, can you try one of the following:
1). Try “169.192.1.42:8001” in your browser.
2). Try “dex.local” and then noVNC in a different browser (if you’re using Chrome, use Mozilla or IE)
3). Try emptying the cache of the browser you’re using.

The reason I’m asking you to do this: if your wifi address is 169.192.1.42, and you’re trying to connect to VNC at 192.254.109.163:8001, your browser may be recycling an old dex.local page, rather than using a new one. Refreshing, emptying the cache, and trying a new browser could help with this.

Also, I’m still not clear on this: Is your Raspberry Pi connected over wifi to the wifi network? Or are you unable to get to the point where you have an IP address in the wifi viewer?

Ok #1 did not work, #2 did not work #3 did not work.

I can ping the robot on the 169.192.1.42 address. I can by typing in 169.192.1.42 in to the browser get to the Raspberry for robots page (with the 2 icons)

when I click on the icon i get page/server not fond on IE and Mozilla.

Wifi viewer? do you mean the web page that displays what devices are connected to my wifi router? if so yes, the robot is online via wifi and its the169.192.1.42 address. that gets me the the Raspbian for robots web page.

Jumping into the fray here for a second.

On most home networks, an IP like 169.x.x.x will indicate a direct Ethernet connection between the Pi and a PC. An IP like 192.x.x.x would be a WiFi connection. If this is the case in your setup, then it might be possible to do a few things. I’m also a bit confused with the following:
I got as far as pinging Dexter industries via WiFi of the robot (following the instructions in the book) But when I attempted to connect to the robot wirelessly, I could not.
Wifi implies wirelessly. I’m assuming you meant via Ethernet for the first sentence?

When you reach the home page - the one that shows the VNC icon - with 169.192.1.42, it implies you reached it via the Ethernet connection, not the Wifi. Then the browser gets confused, and tries the 192.x.x.x one. So instead of trusting the browser to know better, you might be able to use 169.192.1.42:8001 to get into VNC. (or whatever IP is needed to reach that page, just add :8001 at the end of it).

Now, this may work to get into VNC, and allow for actual WIFI setup.

I hope I’m helping and not confusing the issue any further.

Thank you for your response,

I’m not sure how else to explain this, I have gotten through all the steps that required a WIRED connection to the robot. This includes setting up and testing a WIRELESS connection. I am at STEP R on PAGE 39 of the MISSION 1 manual.

When I type http://dex.local in the browser, I get a no connection page (THIS IS VIA A WIRELESS CONNECTION)
When I type 169.192.1.42:8001 in the browser, I get a no connection page (this is also VIA a WIRELESS connection)

WHEN I TYPE 169.192.1.42 in to the browser (WIRELESS CONNECTION) I can get to the Rasbpian for Robots page but cannot proceed any further by clicking on either of the two icons. Both give me a no connection page. again this is all happening WIRELESSLY! I am not connecting to the robot with a wire!

I am under the impression that once a WIRELESS connection is set up and tested and CONFIRMED (which it seems to me that Ive done) I should be able to connect to the robot VIA WIFI (which i mean to be a WIRELESS CONNECTION and not wired) through anything that can pull up a webpage.

Is there anyway that I can speak to anyone live and have them walk me through the steps? Please realize that i have been dealing with an inability to connect to this robot in one shape or form since March 11th and have been in almost daily contact with your team.
