When I use my home computers, or a laptop using my home network, I have not trouble connecting to the GoPiGo. However, if I take the laptop and GoPiGo somewhere else and use a different WiFi, then the connection times out. Am I forgetting a step? Is there a special way to connect to different WiFi sources?

Can you confirm us that you are connecting the GoPiGo/RaspberryPi to each new WiFi network?
There’s nothing special in the way you connect to different WiFi networks. There may be policies on each router that may prevent you from connecting to your GoPiGo robot, so I would check the router and see if there’s anything blocking the GoPiGo.
